Message from the President Welcome
everyone to 2023. We are now well into this year. We have celebrated
the Christmas and New Year season and have now concluded our National
Day.
This year, these events all felt a little unusual to me. At my
church, on Christmas Day, numbers still seemed to be affected by Covid
even though the sense of community was warm. In contrast to this, I wore
a jumper on Boxing Day, when I didn’t feel warm. I wasn’t at all clear
what message I should take from our national day nor how this should
apply to us in Beecroft and Cheltenham.
For my family gatherings, this year was a time when my father-in-law was
no longer a part of them. George Baur lived in Beecroft, particularly
in the 1960s and 1970s, and it was with a sense of loss that we read his
obituary in the on-line Sydney Morning Herald.
Your Civic Trust has always tried to give you the opportunity to hear
from election candidates and join discussions on key public issues. We
will shortly have a State election and then we will have a referendum on
the Voice. The Civic Trust Committee has started to think about how
each of these topics might be best addressed. We have already asked you
what you think are significant State government issues for our two
villages. You have responded by talking about noise on the M2, the
need for State government to support improvements to our open spaces
and to facilitate our movement and activities around our district.
Safety on our roads, especially on Beecroft Road, has also been raised.
This Australia Day, it surprised me how many people did not know that we
have a local history which includes First Fleet settlers and Aboriginal
people who were stolen as children and worked in our houses or who were
active in the 1967 Referendum. The information is there on the
Beecroft Cheltenham History Group web site but perhaps we need to make
this more visible. How is this history relevant to us in 2023? For the
referendum many have said to me about having an opportunity to talk
through why this was proposed in the Uluru Statement. Many want to hear
why the Aboriginal leaders behind this Statement consider that this
should be a first step. Again, is this what is needed for all
Australians and how is this need best satisfied.
These are big matters for 2023. As always I anticipate that the
Committee of the Civic Trust is going to have interesting discussions.
Your Civic Trust has started the year by meeting with our neighbouring
Trusts in Epping and Pennant Hills. We want to make sure our plans are
co-ordinated with theirs even though some of their issues (while
directly affecting us) are not located within our suburbs. Development
in the Epping retail area and traffic on Pennant Hills Road are examples
of matters with which the other trusts are grappling. How to respond to
the shrinking of our tree canopy and how we make use of a cycle way
that does not go through either Epping or Pennant Hills are matters that
involved each of the three Trusts.
It would be remiss of me, if I did not congratulate everyone with a
connection to Beecroft and Cheltenham who was honoured on Australia Day.
Dr Roberts of Cheltenham and his work with emergency medicine was one
who I noted. Others included Kylie Kwong a former student of Cheltenham
Girls, and Professor Susan Kurrle who, while not of our suburbs, is from
Hornsby. Many of us will have seen Professor Kurrle on ABC television
in connection with her work demonstrating the benefits of linking
pre-schoolers (or teenagers) and our more mature citizens. Were there
other local residents who should be highlighted?

Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust Survey. Should the Civic Trust seek to hold a public meeting on the anticipated referendum concerning the Voice?
Survey Results from the last Civic Trust Survey 22% of our readers responded to the survey. The questions put were;
Do you think that the idea to restrict traffic in Hannah Street between
the entry to Beecroft Place carpark and Wongala is, in principle, a
worthy cause to pursue? 42% voted YES. 49.2% voted NO. 8.8% were ambivalent.
Do you think that the idea to increase pedestrian safety and space to
move in the Beecroft retail area is, in principle, something that should
be done? 62% voted YES. 23.8% voted NO. 14.2% were ambivalent.
Clean Up Australia 2023 The
Civic Trust has once again registered the Beecroft Village Green as a
community site for the 2023 Clean Up Australia campaign. Put in
your diary Sunday 5th March, from 9am to 12 Noon. Beecroft Scouts in 2022

However, Any work to a tree that is or forms part of a heritage item or
heritage conservation area, requires approval from the Council pursuant
to the provisions of Section 2.10(3) of the Biodiversity and
Conservation SEPP and/or Clause 5.10 of the HLEP. The Beecroft Cheltenham HCA map can be found HERE.

News from Beecroft Tennis Courts There is a new coach at Beecroft tennis courts, John Abrams. The tennis courts offer
